Just in case you hadn’t heard the slow crescendo of enormous footsteps and minor-key orchestration, Godzilla stomps its way into theaters today. And as we pointed out in our interview with director Gareth Edwards, the eponymous monster isn’t the only kaiju on the scene. Indeed, from the very first Godzilla in 1954, Toho Co. Ltd. has delighted in throwing creature after creature on the screen. So to commemorate the return of its iconic lizard (and the return of quality to its cinematic vehicles), we rounded up our very favorite kaiju from Toho’s original spate of monster movies.

That run, which lasted from 1954 (Godzilla) to 1975 (Terror of Mechagodzilla), also is known as the Shōwa series, and gave us the vast majority of kaiju we know and love today. Believe us, narrowing it down this much hurt us almost as much as Godzilla hurt them.
